She believes that by fostering cultural understanding, we contribute to a more inclusive and diverse society. Rhea has a deep understanding of Māori education principles, cultural protocols, and language revitalisation efforts.

Mel is an active leader in the New Zealand Rugby League community. Kaiwhakahaere Tīma (team leader) for NZRL Women's 19s, Southern Zone Rugby League and Canterbury Rugby League.
